I’ve recently been tinkering around with Stikkit (www.stikkit.com). The service allows you to create quick and simple notes via their webpage or email. I’m still trying to figure out how to work this into my own personal workflow, and as such am playing about with the various features.
One such feature is the ability to create stikkits that represent events. These are then available in the calendar view of Stikkit and can be exported as ics files or be subscribed to as a web DAV hosted ics feed. It’s while working with this part of the tool that I found what appears to be a bug in Outlook 2007.
In 2007, Outlook now offers the ability to subscribe to DAV based calendars (called “Internet Calendars” by Outlook). This is the same technology that Apple uses in iCal for calendar publishing. After reading up on how to use the feature in Outlook (it’s not totally intuitive out the gate) I decided to give it a go.
The calendar with my Stikkit events was sync’d up and I was able to see it in the calendar view (and overlay it just as any other calendar in Outlook). Unfortunately, the appointments were all displayed an hour later than they were scheduled.
After some digging, I found that many folks online were complaining of the same issue but while trying to use Google Calendar feeds in Outlook (it uses the same technology).
Initially, I thought this might be a bug with the two services, but I checked the same feed in Apple’s iCal and Vista’s Windows Calendar application and they both display this AOK.
So, there you have it, a pretty big bug. My pet theory is that while updating the PIM for the new DST rules support in the US, this bug was introduced. Unfortunately, until it’s fixed, this pretty cool feature of online calendars in Outlook is largely useless.
