About

Self PortraitWelcome to Socket Jockeying. My name is Steve Schreiber, and SJ is my personal blog I use to write about any of the various issues or items that come to me – usually while running back and forth across the country at 30,000 feet. Typically, the post are on the technology/software/online business, or on gadgets and associated gewgaws that the wonderful world of the consumer electronics industry provides us, or on travel annoyances/observations/open-questions.

As for whom I am, here are some vitals to get started:

  • Born: July 10, 1975 in Ann Arbor, MI
  • Raised: Flushing, MI and surrounding
  • Educated (sorta): University of Michigan – BSE Computer Engineering
  • Places Lived Since School: Portland, OR; Boston, MA; SF Bay Area, CA; Howell, MI

I make my living working in the computer industry and have worked for a big hardware maker, an enterprise consulting start-up, a shrink-wrapped software start-up, and now a large software maker (hint: starts with an “M” and ends with “soft”). I’ve had roles up and down the assembly line of making software, but today I am a “Program Manager” – which basically means guy who tries to make the code happen without actually doing any coding.

I mentioned that I do a lot of traveling. This is not me bragging about how worldly I am. I’m not jetting off to Belize for bone fishing or anything. No, instead the travel I book is work related and it’s pretty much between a troika of locations (Seattle, San Francisco, and Deee-troit). You see, I live in Michigan (long story why I’m back there) and commute to work on the West Coast. So, I get a lot of time to contemplate many aspects of “grind it out, on a flying bus to get to work” air travel. Hence, some of my posts can seem a little focused on that topic.
